BP Oil Spill
June 17th, 2010 4:11 AM

Marcia Andrews and Dave Tompkins attended a four-hour training session with authorized, OSHA-sanctioned clean-up contractors June 14 at Captiva's South Seas Resort. The very condensed report is that odds are low for any tragic, messy scenes of oil sheens or sludge or mousse on North Captiva. It's due to the distance, currents, weather and sea activity between the gushing BP well and us. Prospects for tar balls in the next few weeks are 10%, but that's what we’ll likely see, eventually and for years to come.

At the training class, after hours of videos about OSHA safety, chemical disaster protocols and big marine operations, we and 120 barrier island volunteers finally learned that tar balls will be our likely hazard. Supposedly, if liquid oil came ashore BP crews would scrape and remove the contaminated sand, but that statement was made referring to Sanibel and Captiva. Here, who knows.

The professionals (with BP-funded contracts) say, we’ll need:

• NO haz mat suits, face masks or respirators

• NO special permits or supervision

• Gloves of Nitrile material, impervious to hydrocarbons. Latex kitchen gloves will quickly fall apart (Home Depot, Lowe‘s)

• Disposal bags, 3 mil contractor bags, oil-resistant type (HD, Lowe’s)

• Pet followers’ pooper scoopers are recommended to minimize bending over

• Disposal will be coordinated by Lee County Emergency Operations

Memorial Day Weekend
June 1st, 2010 6:19 AM

Vacation at Stardance with children, grandchildren and some of their city friends. Beautiful sunny, light breeze weekend.  Water clear as gin and the boys caught many medium size sharks (click here for video).

Morning sunrises spectacular as were the sunsets with friends on the airport beach. Dolphins and Manatees didn't disapoint as they all showed up.  Mating season for Manatees quite a display.  Loggerheads were in the pass mating not to be shown up by the Manatees.

One of the girls jogging on the state land was amazed at the solitude, wildlife and pristine beaches.

Took one of the children's friends to Useppa Island for a visit and then many of us came back at night to pick her up.  Quite a serene night on the water with full moon to guide us.

Tarpon Fishing
May 27th, 2010 6:59 AM

Captain Chuck and bird friend on back of boat at Jensen's, Captiva, FL

Scott Madison and Stephen Frederick of Baton Rouge, LA and Mike Radcliff of Mooresville, NC joined me for a week of tarpon fishing.  While we were very good at getting premium bait and crabs we didn't jump any large tarpon.

We did catch a lot of ladyfish, catfish, trout, jacks, etc. all to be released.

Interested in catching tarpon, this crew found this informative article after we fished for 4 days. how to catch a tarpon.pdf

Hope to show a tarpon in next blog.

SANIBEL SHARK/TARPON

Another great weekend in SW Florida! The threadfins are thick at the Sanibel Causeway and make

for great Tarpon and Shark bait. Headed out to Knapps point on Saturday morning and joined approx

25 boats already there. We saw several large fish (Tarpon) hooked and released in about 17 feet of

water.

We ended up catching a large nurse shark about 7 feet long that ate a mullet head fished on the

bottom. After an hour or so we headed inside looking for Snook and Reds. Just can't quite figure the

pattern out this spring. Ended up finding several pods of large Snook in a series of potholes near

blind pass. They were eating and we had fun with them. I really think threadfins make great Snook

bait in the spring as the Snook try to put on extra weight.

Sunday we decided to take "Mom" up to Boca Grande Pass to watch the Tarpon. Boy were they active

with hundreds of them rolling and jumping near the phosphate docks. Ended up hooking one of them

but just couldn't get into the crowd and number of boats racing to the fish as they surfaced. I know

that's how its done, but its just not me. We fished some of the Captiva Pass docks and pulled out the

perfect tourney red along with a nice fat healthy Snook.

Ended up fishing on the outside of Tarpon Bay and catching two bonnet head sharks and a couple of

big trout on the last of our threadfins. The trouble with this time of year is there are just too many

species, too many choices, too many fish to choose from! I find if I don't have a game plan when I

leave the dock I just don't get a chance to try everything available. Tonight my son and I are taking a

couple dozen hand picked shrimp and hitting some of the Cape Coral docks before bed. We saw an

awful lot of big Snook under the lights last night on the way home..... I will be spending most of

today thinking about those fish.... can't wait until dark. :)

Tarpon are here
May 10th, 2010 11:36 AM

Local authority from the Bait Shack at Punta Rassa reports that Tarpon are rolling off Knaps point in 20-30' of water and hitting on Mackeral.  If only I had frozen a few of the many Mackeral that I caught a few weeks ago!!

Fishing Getting Better
April 27th, 2010 7:38 AM

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

The fishing is getting better. My wife, Sister and Brother-in-law fished Saturday in the back bay of Cayo Costa and found the fishing very active.  Gator Trout hitting over the weed beds. Plenty of action to be seen in the clear water, large sting rays and shark cruising the bay.
